“Statue of Liberty” in Aleppo

Made of rubble, the statue towers over the battered city.

ISTANBUL — The first photographs of the work of the Syrian artist Tammam Azzam first appeared on social networking sites, and then quickly disseminated all around the world.

The Syrian artist assembled the statue from fragments of buildings damaged during the bombings of Aleppo.

Azzam is a graduate from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Damascus. His recent works have been greatly influenced by the war in Syria.
