The political cultural conflict between Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria’s governments and Kurdish minority had a long history behind. The Kurdish question, however well distinguished and definitive, is not quite well understood if outside the contest of its development: the history of Middle East. A connection reinforced in forward time of last century’s events: the evolution from the colonialism time to the modern imperialism, the discover and exploitation of oil, the two World Wars, the local conflicts and the "Cold War”.
Those are just a few of the issues that could make the Kurdish question very much close to European history. In the latest 30 years Kurdish parties addressed their efforts to fight, no longer just against the powers, against repressive regimes of Iran, Turkey, Syria and, before, Iraq. Struggle for independence is properly the same as others currently in other countries, by the minorities oppressed. But this affirmation is only simple in appearance: actually is difficult for Kurds, often, to know their own enemy and that's depending from many things, for example, most of the time, the countries far apart from Kurdistan but present in the international field, formally joined the repressive politic, often with economical helps, covering up the usual dynamics of imperialism behind an indirect action but very effective.
Kurdistan exists from almost 4000 years, it has been lived by an Indo-European population, which the original Zoroastrian religion has been converted to Islam after Arabian conquest. The Kurdish people has lived until last century perfectly integrated to other’s Middle East cultures.
At the end of the First World War this country has been broken down arbitrarily from the European winners who had interests in this area. Since then the situation is still unchanged and the Kurdish population is fighting to have back the right to live free and in peace in his own country.
Let us clear to Italian readers what Kurds really want. The Kurdish people demands for recognition of their minority from governments in the states in which lives, asking to use his own language, his own tradition, but first of all want the democratization of the countries who control Kurdistan. That is the point who determined the brutal repression from the governments that now occupy Kurdistan against Kurdish people.
The first Gulf War in 1991 showed the persecutions against Kurds. It appeared everywhere the tragic and terrible way of their experience, but what missed and continue to stay at the corner of information is the right analysis of their history and culture. They are one of the most important and ancient civilizations of the East, and yet this elementary and basic truth stay in the dark. An omission caused by a "cultured ignorance”.
Surely the Kurdish people couldn't have the richest men of the earth. Generally they are known as oppressed minority. It is a common place, as others, to explain the dismembered of them. In these commonplaces every days thousands of men lose their hope. The Kurds escaping from persecutions provoked by Iran, Turkey, Syria and Iraq, before Saddam's fall, lost the dream to live in a free and independent Kurdistan, often ending in Italian or others European coasts .
Kurdish diaspora is a recent thing. In 1960 Kurds coming from Turkey started to arrive to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France as immigrant workers according to government contracts and deals about immigrant's job. But after Islamic revolution in Iran in 1979, the coup d'etat in Turkey in 1980, the massacre acted by Iraqi regime with Anfal operation and the campaign, launched in 1992 of forced evacuation and the destruction of villages , with a politic of murder by death squads and paramilitary force, the exodus of Kurds towards Europe has been increased.
The most consistent group (about 650 thousands) is in Germany, but other several communities are in Europe. In Italy there are about two thousands, spreads in the center and north, most of them with regular work permit. In Kurdistan there are several rivers , the most famous Tigris and Euphrates which arise in Kurdish area of Turkey. Other rivers as the two Zab born in Turkey and Iran and the Kizil Uzan in Iran. The most big lakes are lake Van in Turkey and lake Urmia in Iran. The climate goes from hot to Nordic cold. Kurdistan is very rich of natural resources, particularly petroleum. In Kurdistan of Iraq has been extracted a 65% of Iraqi petroleum, in Turkey Kurdistan there is iron, natural gas, gold, coal, aluminum, in Iranian Kurdistan has been extracted about 35% of petroleum for exportation by Iran. The zone is very fertile for agriculture and cattle ranch. The states who confined Kurdistan practiced and still practice an economic policy of exploitation.
