ERBIL — Russian authorities are now in negotiations with the Iraqi counterparts to soon change the location of its embassy in the capital city of Baghdad due to serious security threats, an official said.
“The negotiations to provide Russia with a new site for the embassy in Baghdad are underway. In general, the Iraqis are ready to provide it, but we have doubts about the safety of the territory,” the Izvestiya newspaper cited an unnamed source.
“We are now assessing the propriety of accepting the site that the Iraqi authorities are ready to provide since everything depends on the safety and the terms of construction,” the source said as reported by Sputnik.
According to the source, the Russian government has so far been deploying only male diplomats without their families to its embassy in Baghdad due to “extremely dangerous” situation in the Iraqi capital city.
The Russian embassy currently locates in Baghdad’s Mansour district while its future exact location remains obscure up to the moment even though the Iraqi media claimed it to be on a main road leading to Baghdad International Airport.
