ERBIL — A retired US army general has called on his country to fully support Kurdistan’s independence referendum as Baghdad is now acting against the interests of Washington.
Attending a panel during an event on Kurdistan Region’s independence in the US, General Ronald Griffith, said that the Iraqi central government is no longer an ally of the US as it is under the influence of Tehran and acts in parallel with Iran’s agenda.
He insists that the ground is set for the establishment of an independent Kurdistan.
Ex-General Jay Garner earlier said that Sykes–Picot Agreement which has defined the current political borders in the Middle East, has ended with the Kurds this time deserving a state of their own.
The event in Washington, titled “The Kurdistan Region: Strategic U.S. Ally in a Tough Neighbourhood”, is ongoing with the presence of Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) Chancellor Masrour Barzani and Kirkuk Governor Najmaddin Karim.
