LONDON — A van ploughed into people near a north London mosque on Monday early morning, killing one man and injuring eight others.
The early-morning incident carried out against worshippers who had recently left prayers at the nearby Finsbury Park mosque.
Members of the public managed to detain a man, believed to be the driver of the van which ran over the worshippers.
The British PM Theresa May said in a statement that police were treating the incident “as a potential terrorist attack”.
“I will chair an emergency meeting later this morning. All my thoughts are with the victims, their families and the emergency services on the scene,” she said.
Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, described the incident as “a horrific terrorist attack on innocent people in Finsbury Park.”
He added “While this appears to be an attack on a particular community, like the terrible attacks in Manchester, Westminster and London Bridge it is also an assault on all our shared values of tolerance, freedom and respect.”
