SOFIA — US State Department approved a sale of military equipment to the Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga forces worth around $295.6 million.
The Pentagon announced on Wednesday that the US State Department has agreed to sell military equipment for the artillery and infantry Peshmerga units in the Kurdistan Region worth $295.6 million, Kurdistan24 reported.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency further said in a statement that the requested equipment will be used by the Peshmerga artillery battalions and infantry brigades, under the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Peshmerga with the concurrence of the central government.
According to the State Department, the US has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to Iraq in the form of military equipment for two Peshmerga infantry brigades and two support artillery battalions in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
In addition, the statement continued by saying that the proposed sale will benefit the IS foreign policy and national security in the long term, as it will contribute the fight against terrorism in the Middle East and further improve the relations between the US and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
