ERBIL — Belgian federal government will first assign a diplomat to Baghdad and this will set the stage to open an honorary consular office in the Kurdistan Region, according to an official statement issued on Saturday.
As stated in the statement by Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)'s representative office to the European Union (EU), the intent by the Belgian government was disclosed in a meeting between KRG and Belgian officials.
KRG's Representative to EU, Dlawar Azhgayi, on Saturday paid a visit to the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and met with officials for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA)'s affairs.
According to the statement, the Belgian officials think it is important for their country to open an honorary consular office in Kurdistan Region.
The Belgian officials were also cited as saying that assigning a diplomat to Baghdad will pave the way for a consular office in Erbil.
