ERBIL — US-backed alliance, known as the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), announced on Friday the complete control of the Old City in Raqqa after engaging in heavy clashes with the Islamic State (IS) militants.
The SDF stated on Friday that its fighters removed IS from Raqqa's Old City district.
"Our forces today seized full control of the Old City in Raqqa after clashes with Daesh," Talal Sello, a spokesman for the Kurdish-led SDF, told AFP on Friday using the Arabic acronym for IS.
The SDF is now closer than ever to the IS "security quarter in the city centre, where most of its main bases are”.
Most of the IS militants and approximately 25,000 civilians are believed to remain in the city centre.
The SDF is a US-backed military alliance, consisting of Kurds and Arabs, to retake the IS de facto capital of Raqqa in northern Syria.
