ERBIL — Fighters of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the militias of Hashd al-Shaabi have set up checkpoints across Sinjar and its nearby districts for taxing people and goods, a local source told BasNews.
Idris Zozani, a member of Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) representation office, confirmed the report and said people transporting goods through the checkpoints are obliged to pay so-called taxes.
“PKK and Hashd al-Shaabi share the revenue between themselves,” he said, noting that there is no fixed laws or regulations in such actions.
Zozani also pointed out that the presence of the PKK in Sinjar puts at risk civilians’ security while Turkey continues to target their positions wherever they are.
