ERBIL — A group of armed men assassinated a police veteran overnight on Monday in central Kirkuk.
The victim, identified as ‘Basim Nouri Habawi’ was gunned down on Quds street of Kirkuk. The assassins managed to flee the scene immediately before the security forces arrived there.
According to the information obtained by BasNews, Habawi was running to an exchange center after his retirement from Iraq’s federal police.
Since October 2017 when the Iraqi army and Iranian-backed militias of Hashd al-Shaabi overran Kirkuk, the Kurdish city has been witnessing a growing number of assassinations, kidnaps, and terrorist attack.
Baghdad is being blamed for failing to secure the region despite having the Islamic State (IS) declared removed from the entire country.
