ERBIL — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani has issued a statement to urge all sides on restraint as the special forces for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) are attacking the headquarter of Change Movement (Gorran).
“We are saddened by the unrest in Sulaymaniyah. Therefore, we call for an end to the gunshots against the headquarters of political parties in Sulaymaniyah. We also urge the security forces to fulfil their responsibilities and protect all parties,” reads the statement.
Barzani stated that those who are unsatisfied with the process of Iraqi parliamentary election should not provoke unrest but file complaints at the electoral commission.
Gorran media outlets reported hours after the closure of the polls that a special force of the PUK had encircled the headquarter of Gorran and fired rounds.
Gorran has called on its supporters to rush to its headquarter and make a human shield around the Zargata hill.
The Change Movement, which is the main rival of the PUK in Sulaymaniyah, has accused the PUK of widespread violations at the polling stations with support of a “regional power”.
