ERBIL — Chancellor of Kurdistan Region Security Council Masrour Barzani met on Thursday in the White House with US National Security Advisor Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster, discussing bilateral ties between Erbil and Washington.
“During their meeting, both officials reaffirmed the partnership between the United States and the Kurdistan Region,” said the KRSC in a readout published on its website.
“Chancellor Barzani welcomed General McMaster’s support for a strong and united Kurdistan Region in a strong united Iraq and said the Kurdistan Region’s constitutional rights must be respected.”
Barzani also shed light on the abuses directed at the Kurds under the authority of Iraqi forces and Iranian-backed Shi’ite militiamen across the disputed Kurdish territories.
The senior Kurdish official said Erbil expects the Iraqi Government to take practical measures to build trust and advance a broader dialogue.
“Both officials agreed on the importance of addressing the conditions that led to the rise of ISIL and explored ways to strengthen the shared fight against terrorist organizations,” the KRSC said, using a different acronym for the Islamic State (IS).
