SULAYMANIYAH — Security forces in Kurdistan Region’s Sulaymaniyah province raided the headquarter of Nalia Radio and Television station on Tuesday and shut the channel down, said head of the Metro Centre for Freedom of Press.
Kurdistan Region’s Minister of Youth and Culture Affairs, who is from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), issued a ministerial order earlier the day to suspend NRT’s broadcast in both Kurdish and Arabic services, saying the news channel had “provoked protesters to violence”.
Meanwhile, security forces arrested Shaswar Abdulwahid, the owner of Nalia Group of Companies, at his arrival in Sulaymaniyah airport on Tuesday. He had publicly backed the violent protests across the province.
According to information obtained by BasNews, NRT staff were also held inside the channel’s headquarter after their broadcast was shut down.
