ERBIL — Peshmerga forces will not withdraw from Gwer (al-Kuwayr) district, around 50 km to the southwest of Erbil, said a Peshmerga official, denying any agreement between Erbil and Baghdad over the withdrawal.
Halgurd Hikamt, head of Peshmerga Ministry’s media, told BasNews “No form of agreement has been made between the Peshmerga Ministry and Iraqi forces over the withdrawal of Peshmerga forces from Gwer.”
He explained that Peshmerga forces are ready to respond to any aggressions of the Iraqi forces aimed at taking over the district and its surrounding areas.
The Peshmerga official confirmed the reports about the deployment of a large number of Iraqi forces in the areas near Gwer district.
Regarding negotiating an agreement with Baghdad, Hikamt said they have not shut the door for discussions, but Iraq still resorts to the use of force to resolve the political disputes.
“We believe that we need to reach an inclusive agreement on all issues, including the military affairs,” he said, adding that Iraq is evading discussions with the Kurdistan Region.
