ERBIL — Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that the relation between Moscow and Erbil cannot be harmed by the crisis in the region.
“Generally, our relations with Kurdistan and the Kurds are historical, long-term, and good and there is a good trust in our relations,” Putin said at an annual end-of-year press conference.
“Our companies, especially Rosneft, are working in the [Kurdistan Region],” the Russian President continued. “We believe that this will benefit Iraq, Kurdistan, and, in particular, it benefits the Russian economy.”
The Russian president said Moscow is aware of the crisis facing the Kurdistan Region, but they cannot pose an obstacle to the developing ties between them.
“Russia will continue to work on enhancing such relations with the Kurds,” Putin added.
Concerning the disputes between Erbil and Baghdad, Putin encouraged the sides on peaceful dialogues within the framework of the constitution.
