ERBIL — The offensive of the Shi’ite militias against Peshmerga forces in Pirde town south of Erbil on Friday was firmly responded.
Heavy clashes erupted between Peshmerga Forces and the Iran-backed Shi’ite militias of Hashd al-Shaabi in Pirde (Altun Kopri) town on the outskirt of Erbil early on Friday.
Hussein Yazdanpana, a Peshmerga Commander in Pirde, told BasNews that the Peshmerga forces managed to destroy the offensive of the militias. He revealed that twelve Humvees and armored vehicles of the militias were destroyed.
The Peshmerga commander explained that “Four brigades of the Hashd al-Shaabi, backed by a neighboring country, are attacking Peshmerga,” adding that this indicates large forces of Hashd al-Shaabi are present in Kirkuk.
The clashes broke out after the Iraqi Forces and Hashd al-Shaabi, attempted to move onto the town of Pirde, near Erbil.
The Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) confirmed that the Peshmerga forces destroyed one US Abrams tank and a dozen of armored vehicles used by Hashd al-Shaabi in Friday’s clashes.
