ERBIL — Chancellor of Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC), Masrour Barzani has stated that the US and international community’s surprising opposition to Kurdistan Region’s independence referendum has emboldened Baghdad to take collective punitive measures against the people of Kurdistan.
“What we did not expect is opposing the referendum. Even if they did not want to support the referendum they could have stayed numeral or at least encouraged Baghdad and Erbil to sit around the table and to sort out the problems peacefully,” Barzani said during an interview on BBC’s Hardtalk.
“This hasn’t happened. And in fact this opposition has emboldened Baghdad to take such measures and even to reach out to the neighbouring countries to put a blockade on Kurdistan and to collectively punish the people of Kurdistan,” the senior Kurdish official pointed out.
He explained that Erbil had no other choice but return to the voice of the people of Kurdistan because the Iraqi government and PM Haider al-Abadi had already made it clear that Baghdad would not accept a referendum “now or in the future”.
