ERBIL — Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga Ministry has notified US diplomatic mission of Baghdad’s military mobilisations against Kurds in south of Kirkuk and north of Mosul.
The Peshmerga official held a meeting on Thursday with US Consul General in Erbil, Ken Gross, discussing the situation on contact lines between the Peshmerga and Iraqi army, as well as military coordinations between Erbil and Washington, according to a statement by the Ministry.
Deputy Peshmerga Minister Sarbast Lazgin said during the meeting that no goodwill is understood from Iraqi army’s recent military mobilisations near Sinajr in north of Mosul and other disputed Kurdish areas south of Kirkuk.
Lazgin called on the US to take immediate measures in order to prevent any undesired confrontation.
The US envoy ensured Erbil officials of Washington’s efforts in monitoring and settling down the situation. He also urged Bagdad not to provoke the tensions further.
Late on Wednesday, Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) revealed that the Iraqi army, Shi’ite Arab militias of Hashd al-Shaabi and Federal Police forces are preparing to conduct a “major attack” against Peshmerga in south of Kirkuk and north of Mosul.
