ERBIL — Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani reiterated that Erbil is willing to engage in dialogue with Baghdad to reach an agreement over the pressing issues.
Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani received the German Ambassador to Iraq, Cyrill Nunn, and his accompanying delegation on Tuesday.
The German Ambassador stated his country’s position on the political situation of Iraq and the Iraqi government’s measures against Kurdistan Region following the September independence referendum of Kurdistan. He explained that Kurdistan Region’s stability is important to Germany.
The German diplomat called on Erbil and Baghdad to avoid stepping towards tensions and exacerbating the situation. He offered Germany’s support to kickstart negotiations between Erbil and Baghdad to reach a consensus over the issues, emphasizing that the tensions are not in the interest of either side.
Barzani thanked Germany for its continuous support and stated that the people of Kurdistan Region voted in a peaceful democratic process to express their will. He highlighted that Kurdistan has not taken a step to intensify the situation.
Barzani emphasized that they were ready for discussions with Baghdad on an open agenda and without any preconditions.
