ERBIL — Catalan President Carles Puigdemont congratulated Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani on the independence referendum of Kurdistan which was held on Monday, September 25.
In a phone call on Tuesday, Puigdemont extended his congratulations to Barzani over the historic referendum on secession from Iraq.
“This morning I called President Masoud Barzani to congratulate him on the Kurdistan Referendum. We wished each other great success,” said Puigdemont in a statement on his Twitter account.
Like Kurdistan Region, Catalonia, which is currently part of Spain, is seeking to secede from Spain. The region has also scheduled an independence referendum for October 1st, a move which is being firmly opposed by Spain.
