ERBIL — The son of the Yezidi community leader emphasized that independence is a legitimate right of Kurdistan and reaffirmed their strong support for establishing a sovereign state of Kurdistan.
Ismat Tahsin Bag, son of Mir Tahsin Bag, the grand authority for Yezidis in the world told BasNews “The establishment of an independent state is a legitimate right of Kurds and we put our heart and soul into establishing the Kurdistan state.”
However, he highlighted that they are looking to the new state for securing the Yezidis’ rights, affirming “We are not separate from Kurds and Kurdistan; Barzani is our president and the holly Lalish stands with Kurdistan.”
Regarding the Hashd al-Shaabi militias, who control a number of Yezidi areas in southern Sinjar, the Yezidi figure said that Hashd al-Shaabi won’t protect the rights of Yezidis. He noted that the Yezidi IDPs have not returned home in southern Sinjar due to the presence of the militia group.
He also said that they have demanded the UN and Kurdistan Regional Government for a province status for Nineveh Plains. He added that they are seeking to have a province within the Kurdistan Region.
Back in 2014, the Islamic State militant group attacked Sinjar, the Yezidi majority region in Nineveh Plains, where they massacred hundreds of men and abducted thousands of women and girls.
The Yezidi leader called for rescuing the remaining Yezidi abductees still in the hands of the IS extremists.
