MANDALI — A group of Shi’ite Arab Militias of Asaib Ahl al-Haq — an armed militia group of the Hashd al-Shaabi, raided on Monday the headquarter of Mandali Municipality after forcing its Kurdish members to resign from their positions.
Head of the city’s local administration, head of the municipality council, and other members are among those whom were forced to resign a day earlier, said Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) representative in Mandali.
The action comes after Hashd al-Shaabi militias, also known as Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), organised a gathering in the town and took Kurdistan flags down from the buildings before burning them.
The action, condemned by Kurdistan Region, is believed to be at the wake of local authorities approving the inclusion of Mandali in an imminent independence referendum of Kurdistan.
Mandali is locate in Diyala province, close to the border with Iran.
