ERBIL — Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani thanked the people of Sulaymaniyah for once again proving the spirit of resilience and sacrifice for the legitimate right of Kurds.
“The true position of the honourable people of Sulaymaniyah shined out yesterday,” Barzani said in a statement, referring to the people’s refusal to attend an event on Saturday which was set to promote the “No” vote in the upcoming independence referendum.
“Once again you proved that Sulaymaniyah is the city of resilience and sacrifice. I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart and on behalf of the people of Kurdistan,” reads the statement.
On Saturday evening, an event was organised in Sulaymaniyah to encourage people to vote against Kurdistan’s independence in the 25th September referendum. However, the campaign was nipped in the bud as a small group of people attended, let alone the tensions that occurred with some attendees who opposed the campaign itself.
