ERBIL — Meeting with the Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Abul Ghent in Erbil, Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani has made it clear that holding the independence referendum is a decision of the people and political parties of Kurdistan Region, and cannot be postponed by an individual.
According to a press release by Kurdistan Region Presidency, (KRP) the pair reviewed the prolonged disputes between Erbil and Baghdad, with the Kurdish president reminding his guest about Baghdad’s failure to remain committed to a genuine political partnership with Erbil.
“Mutual agreements and the constitution have been violate,” Barzani stated, noting that these violations have led the Kurdistan Region to hold an independence referendum as it is the best peaceful mean towards self-determination.
Commending the role of the Kurdish Peshmerga forces in the war against Islamic State (IS), Gheit said that the stability and strength of the Kurdistan Region is of significant importance to the Arab League.
He also requested Barzani to postpone the independence vote and give the Erbil-Baghdad negotiations another chance in hopes of finding common grounds to live together.
In response, Barzani said, “Referendum is not a personal decision to be delayed easily; but the decision of the people and political factions of Kurdistan”.
