ERBIL— Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit arrived on Saturday evening in Erbil and is expected to meet with Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani.
Following a visit to Baghdad and meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi, Aboul-Gheit arrived in Erbil International Airport today and was received by senior Kurdistan Region officials.
The main issue that has brought the Arab League top official to Iraq is the imminent referendum on independence of the Kurdistan Region, reports suggest, adding Aboul-Gheit will demand Barzani in this visit to postpone the vote.
Earlier in a letter the official addressed the same demand to Barzani but the appeal was turned down.
Despite the pressures from the neighboring countries and Baghdad, Kurdistan president has refused to revert the plan for the independence vote which will take place on 25th September.
