ERBIL— French Foreign Minister on Saturday told Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani that his country will support the Kurdistan Region in peace and in war, according to a report by Kurdistan Region presidency.
A high level French government delegation which included the Minister of the Armed Forces Florence Parly and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development Jean-Yves Le Drian visited Barzani today in Erbil.
The ongoing operations against the Islamic State (IS) and the Kurdistan independence referendum (set for September 25 this year) were among the subjects that the senior officials discussed in the meeting.
The French ministers extended their thanks to Barzani and Peshmerga forces for their great role in the liberation of Mosul and appreciated Kurdistan Region's hospitality for sheltering enormous number of IDPs in the time of war against the IS.
The officials also voiced their country's support for the talks between Baghdad and Erbil for resolving their difference over holding the referendum.
President Barzani expressed his gratitude to the French people and government as he alluded to the support from France to the Kurdistan Region immediately following the IS attack on the Kurdish town of Sinjar, on August 3, 2014.
He reiterated the referendum should take place on time without any delay.
