ERBIL— Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) backs holding the referendum on independence of Kurdistan Region and will punish any members who support the anti-referendum campaign, the spokesperson for PUK's Central Council stated on Thursday.
Latif Nerwayi stated his party does not accept for any of its members to side with the so-called "No" Vote to Referendum, a campaign which was announced last week.
Those who disobey the order will be held responsible and will get punished by the PUK leadership council, Nerwayi said, without specifying the nature of the punishment.
"We regard referendum as a vital and decisive cause of our people therefore we support it," the PUK official remarked as he hoped the parties in the Kurdistan Region can reconcile in the interest of national consensus for holding the referendum (due on September 25, 2017.)
A group of activists, MPs, businessmen and journalists announced the anti-referendum campaign, claiming the vote does not serve the national interest but interests of some parties.
Among the people who organized the campaign is Farhad Sangawi, who was until the declaration of the campaign a PUK member but was soon stripped off his membership with the PUK for participating in the movement.
