ERBIL— Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani on Tuesday congratulated Omar Sayid Ali for being elected as the General Coordinator of the Change Movement (Gorran).
Barzani, also the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), congratulated Ali in a phone call, which marks the first on a high level in the past two years between Gorran and the KDP.
Barzani hoped that with its new leadership, Gorran can turn to a factor to further strengthen national unity and help in unifying the efforts to resolve the issues and disputes.
On Tuesday Ali was elected unanimously by 38 members of Gorran Council to replace the former and the first Gorran leader, Nawshirwan Mustafa, who died of cancer in May this year.
Delivering a speech after his election, Ali, a founding member of Gorran, promised to stay committed to the principles of Gorran Movement and continue the path Mustafa opened.
On October 12, 2015, Kurdistan parliament speaker, Yusif Mohammed from Gorran, was prevented from entering the parliament due to political disputes. Gorran ministers were also relieved of duty later.
Tensions between Gorran and the KDP, at which Gorran points the finger for suspending parliament, seem to recess after recently the KDP suggested Gorran officials can take over their previous posts.
Some observers believe the new Gorran general coordinator, who was a former cadre at both the KDP and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and played a key role in reconciliation between the two parties in 1990s, will also be influential in reconciliation between the KDP and Gorran.
