IZMIR — A Kurdish family "lucky to be alive" was discovered in a refrigerated container on a ferry in southeastern Ireland, a source from the Irish authorities said on Saturday.
According to the authorities, the 40-foot refrigerated container was found on Thursday on a Stena Line ferry traveling from France. Four adults, two teenagers and two children, members of the same family were discovered inside the container, The Irish Times reported.
The source added that the family required immediate medical attention, as the two young children were in a bad state, but they are all doing well at the moment, and have been transferred to Dublin, where they have been housed.
The Kurdish family reportedly fled Turkey in the past few weeks and went to Greece first, however, the Irish authorities are trying to figure out how the family ended up in the container, but the Immigration Council of Ireland (ICI) said they should be allowed to stay in the country after they have applied for asylum.
