ERBIL — Peshmerga forces foiled an offensive of Islamic State (IS) militants carried out early on Sunday on an airbase in Tuz Khurmatu, south of Kirkuk.
Around four IS suicide bombers had managed to sneak into Hiliwa airbase in Tuz Khurmatu where regiment 4 of Brigade 116 of the Soran Peshmerga Forces are stationed.
One of the suicide bombers detonated his explosives at the entrance to the base while others were gunned down by the Peshmerga forces. The attack did not cause any deaths among the Peshmerga forces, however, one Peshmerga troop was slightly injured.
The IS militants attack the Peshmerga forces in Tuz Khurmatu and other areas in southern Kikruk quite often. Observers believe that such attacks of the militants outside Mosul are aimed at diverting the focus from the battle in Mosul where the militants are facing significant defeat and have lost control of over 95% of the city.
