ERBIL — Calling it a “decisive decision”, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) bloc of the Iraqi parliament has offered its support to Kurdistan Region’s independence referendum, saying they will spare no effort to make it successful.
“This is a historic decision, and people’s goal can be pursued only through unity of the [Kurdish] political parties,” the KDP bloc said in a press release.
“This [Kurdistan’s independence] is for the sake of the Peshmerga blood which has been shed, for the sacrifices they made.”
On Wednesday this week, 15 Kurdish political parties gathered in Erbil to discuss the independence referendum with Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani chairing the meeting. They decided to hold the referendum on 25th September this year.
Also, Kurdistan Region’s presidential and parliamentary elections are set for later in November.
