ERBIL — Another young Iraqi teenager has reportedly been killed in the country’s capital city for dressing and behaving against conservative social norms.
According to media reports and online statements by activists, Mahmoud al-Mutairi, 15, was suspected of being homosexual which is strongly rejected by the majority of Iraq’s conservative society.
Details of the murder are not available, but human rights activists said Mutairi’s final words were: “I want to see my mother”.
It came as another shocking news report in the past few weeks after the assassination of Iraqi model Tare Faris. Before that, two other women were killed in Baghdad and Basra.
However, killing teenagers over suspected homosexuality is not an isolated crime in Iraq. In the past few years, several young boys were killed for their hairstyle and dressing, known in Iraq as EMO.
