ERBIL — At least three rockets were fired on Thursday into Basra Airport, landing near the US consulate, according to media reports.
The incident took place on Thursday evening but it was reported on Friday by the Iraqi media outlets.
According to Baghdad Post, airport authorities evacuated the civil servants from the area in anticipation of further attacks.
The reports did not mention any possible damages after the alleged attack.
As tensions between Washington and Tehran escalate, Iranian-backed Shi’ite militias in Iraq several times in the past threatened targeting the US interests in the country.
The US embassy in Baghdad, located in the fortified Green Zone, previously came under similar rocket attacks with no damages caused.
