ERBIL- A commander from the Islamic State (IS) organization with close ties with the IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed on Saturday.
Russia Today reported Abu Tareq, a former senior Iraqi army official who had escaped from a prison in Iraq, was among the 20 militants who were killed today.
The source cited officials from the Iraqi intelligence as saying the Iraqi forces managed to eliminate the militants who had fled Hawija battle.
The jihadists were targeted in Mount Hamrin and near Anbar province.
After more than three years, this week central Hawija, a town southwest of Kirkuk, was retaken from the Islamic extremists. The battle around the town, however, continues.
