ERBIL— Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi spoke over the phone with Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani about the destiny of the Islamic State (IS) members who surrendered to Peshmerga forces in Tel Afar.
Iraqi media reported on Friday that there is a high level coordination between Erbil and Baghdad and commanders from both parties with regards to the case of the IS captives.
The battle to retake Tel Afar and Azaziyah, last areas held by IS in Nineveh province, took only 12 days.
Military observers described the operation, which concluded on Thursday as "very swift."
Peshmerga forces were able to eliminate up to 170 militants in an ambush as they were trying to secure a route from Tel Afar to Syria.
