ERBIL— The Islamic State (IS) organization executed 16 IS militants on Saturday in Tal Afar, some 60km west of Mosul, Iraqi media reports indicated.
A judge of the organization in the town ordered the execution of the militants and the order was enforced right away, according to the reports.
Some of the executed members were local to Tal-Afar, an IS stronghold, and some were foreigners.
It is not clear what the people were convicted of but the residents of Tal Afar were cited in the reports saying the IS militants are overwhelmed by fear after hearing the news about the launch of Tal Afar operation in a near future.
After almost nine months of clashes, Mosul finally came back to hands of pro-government forces in July.
There are several other area as Tal Afar and Hawija in which the IS is consolidating its presence. Yet, the Iraqi government has so far announced no plans for further operations against the extremists in these areas.
