ERBIL — The so-called Islamic State (IS) claimed on Monday, its militants killed more than 60 Iraqi soldiers in a suicide bombing attack near the Iraq-Syria border.
According to a message intercepted by the SITE Intelligence Group, the extremist group said that 68 Iraqi soldiers were killed in a suicide attack carried out by the IS militants in the area of Jamouna, Kurdistan24 reported.
The attack was reportedly launched from three directions, clashing into the Iraqi army troops in their military base in al-Furat. As a result of the assault six military barracks were set on fire, seven vehicles were destroyed and one Iraqi soldier was taken hostage by the IS insurgents, SITE added.
The extremists also captured three military vehicles equipped with machine guns, rocket launchers, and various weapons and ammunitions, the message sent to SITE stated.
The intelligence group further revealed that the attack was initially carried out by an IS militant named Abu Hassan al-Iraqi, after which the military base was stormed.
However, to this moment no official statement has been made by the Iraqi authorities on what the exact number of killed soldiers actually is.
