ERBIL— Clashes between Iraqi forces and Islamic State (IS) militants near Shirqat district of Nineveh Friday left behind 13 militants dead.
Capt. Amir Wathiq, from Nineveh police service, told BasNews that the militants had infiltrated Hud village near Shirqat, some 100 km south of Mosul.
Clashes erupted after the IS extremists attacked the local security forces in the village, which is on the borderline between the Qayyara district and Shirqat.
Three members of the local forces were also wounded in the crossfire.
Wathiq noted the Iraqi forces have strengthened their positions in southern Mosul to prevent further infiltration of jihadists, especially from Shirqat which is still held by the IS.
