MOSUL — The Joint Operations Command stated on Saturday that the liberation of the entire Old City district in west Mosul from Islamic State (IS) militants will be announced in the next few hours.
The spokesperson for the Joint Operations Command, Brigadier General Yahya Rasool said on Saturday that the security forces managed to control almost the entire Old City district of Mosul except a small pocket which will be retaken within few hours.
The Iraqi Federal Police Chief Major Raed Jawdat, announced on Friday, that the federal police forces have completed their mission in the Old City of Mosul.
Abdul Wahab al-Saadi, Commander of Anti-terrorism Forces also said on Friday that their forces were about to conclude the battle of al-Maidan neighbourhood, the last IS-held area in Old City district.
Iraqi government forces, backed by a US-led coalition, launched a military offensive to retake Mosul on October 17, 2016. The eastern side of Mosul was recaptured in January after just three months of battles. The second phase of the operation to retake the western part of the city, including Mosul’s Old City, was launched in February 2017.
