ERBIL— Two suicide-bombers affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) organization exploded themselves on Saturday evening in eastern Mosul, killing eight people and wounding 19 more, Iraqi War Media Cell reported.
Three policemen were among the people killed in the blasts.
The media cell of the Iraqi Defense Ministry said the IS members aimed at targeting Muthanna Market but after they felt the Iraqi forces knew about their plot, exploded themselves before reaching the target.
Jabbar Hassan, an Iraqi army officer said strong security measures have been taken to prevent the infiltration of IS militants and suicide bombers from western Mosul to the eastern part of the city.
The battle to retake Mosul has been ongoing since October, 2016. Iraqi forces claim only 20 square kilometers of Mosul is now held by IS, which is now besieged in the Old City of Mosul.
