MOSUL — On the second day of the west Mosul operation, the Iraqi counter-terrorism troops managed to retake two more villages in south of Mosul and started storming the biggest Iraqi army base in northern Iraq.
Major Ali Mohsen from the Iraqi elite forces told BasNews "the troops are rapidly advancing from the southern axis and have freed the villages al-Saj and al-Hawi."
The elite forces have also began to storm the Ghazlani military camp, anticipated to be fully retaken within the next few hours, Mohsen said.
The Iraqi officer also added that 25 Islamic State (IS) militants including four suicide bombers were killed today with seizing two car bombs which were parked in the near Ghazlani camp.
He pointed out that "the engineering units dealt with a lot of explosives and ordnance left by IS to prevent the troops from recapturing the camp."
