MOSUL — More than a week after the Iraqi Special Forces (ISF) entered the district of Zohour in Mosul, they have managed to fully seize the area and oust the Islamic State (IS) militants.
Lt. Col. Muhanad al-Tamimi told the Associated Press on Friday that his men also recaptured the neighborhood of Qadissiyah-2, making it the 23rd retaken neighborhood by the ISF in the eastern areas of the city of Mosul.
However, there is a certain level of confusion in regards to the exact number of liberated neighborhoods, mostly due to the fact that the ISF commanders are using different maps of the city.
Most of the fighting in Mosul so far has taken place in the eastern parts of the city, where the ISF is slowly moving further into the city, mostly due to fear for the lives of the local civilians.
The Iraqi forces, backed by Kurdish Peshmerga on the ground and US-led coalition from the sky, lunched a large-scale operation on October 17 to retake country’s second largest city, Mosul, from the extremist group.
