ERBIL — An 11-year-old child was killed on Wednesday after an improvised explosive device (IED) went off in the vicinity of Makhmour, a Kurdish disputed town to the southwest of Erbil.
Makhmour Mayor Rizgar Mohammed told BasNews that the blast also injured two civilians.
The explosion was caused by an old IED believed to be made by the Islamic State (IS) and planted when the group was in control of the town back in 2014.
“Old explosives are a serious threat to the civilians in Makhmour, and they leave victims every now and then,” Mohammed said.
