ERBIL - Kurdistan Region Parliament has welcomed Friday's agreement between Erbil and Baghdad on the administration of Sinjar, calling on the federal government to also compensate the Yezidis.
"We happily welcome the agreement between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the federal government on the situation in Sinjar," reads a statement by the parliamentary committee of the disputed areas.
This agreement, in the meantime, would help the two sides to better deal with the obstacles in restoring stability in Sinjar, the statement continued.
The parliament further congratulated Yezidis on their opportunity to return to their places of origin, years after they were displaced due to the Islamic State (IS) fight as well as other similar security challenges in the region.
Apart from thanking the Iraqi government, the parliament also called on Baghdad to compensate the religious minority group who were directly affected by the IS attacks in 2014.
The KRG and federal government on Friday announced a "historic" agreement on the normalization of situation in Sinjar in terms of security and governance, a deal which was soon welcomed by the US and UNAMI as well as top Kurdish and Iraqi officials.
