ERBIL — Kurdish prominent leader and the president of ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Masoud Barzani, on Tuesday received Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, to discuss the latest political developments.
During the meeting, Barzani and Hennis-Plasschaert exchanged views on the snap elections in Iraq, which are scheduled for June 2021, according to a press release by Barzani Headquarters.
Barzani put forward his opinion and concerns over the upcoming polls as well as the election law.
They also discussed the hundreds of thousands of Yezidis who are still displaced despite their hometowns being already liberated, saying that efforts should continue so to help the Yezidis return to their homes safely.
Hennis-Plasschaert’s visit to Erbil comes a few days after she met with Iraqi officials in Baghdad as well as the country’s top Shia cleric, Ali al-Sistani, to discuss the elections.
