ERBIL - Sinjar Mayor Mahma Khalil revealed on Wednesday that suicide among displaced Yezidis in the region is on the rise, noting that several cases have been recorded in the past few days.
In one week alone, at least four young people, including three boys and one girl, have committed suicide in Sinjar, the mayor explained to BasNews.
Many of the Yezidis who have survived the brutality of the Islamic State are reportedly suffering form psychological traumas after being subjected to inhumane tortures and loosing many family members.
The Islamic State (IS) attacked Sinjar in mid 2014 and abducted over 6,000 individuals despite the killing of hundreds of others.
There are over 2,500 Yezidis still missing after they were abducted by the jihadist group.
Khalil argued that four suicide cases in one week "is a dangerous sign" and that investigations should be launched into the issue before the situation deteriorates.
