ERBIL — A vast area of Kurdish wheat farms in the disputed Makhmour district was burned to ashes on Sunday as the number of similar incidents grew recently in other contested Kurdish territories.
According to the information obtained by BasNews from the locals, crops were set on fire in broad daylight in the village of Azikand, near Makhmour, southwest of Erbil.
“Farmers had to call on the people from Makhmour to help them control the blaze,” the source said.
For the second year in a row, Kurdish-owned farms in north of Iraq are facing the challenge of “intentional” fires. The farms are mainly those located in the areas disputed between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government of Iraq.
Azikand villagers previously on Saturday reported a similar incident, which also cause damage to the crops in the area.
